Mobile App Development Continues To Get Commoditized With Google’s App Inventor For Android

Everybody seems to need a mobile app nowadays, even though the debate continues as to whether mobile web apps or native apps are more effective. For now native apps rule though firms such as ABI Research are predicting the mobile web to overtake native apps by 2013.  YouTube releasing it’s new mobile web version of YouTube is a step in this direction as well.

iPhone recently had DIY app creators with AppMakr and now Google itself has come out with a rather simple development tool to create Android based apps for non-developer types called App Inventor.  This is another step towards commoditization of the native app marketplace and a big step forward for Google to allow anyone access to app development.  But, as always, this will most likely spur a quantity vs. quality debate, so quality of apps from App Inventor remains to be scene.

From a standpoint on whether providing these DIY application makers work, we would be quick to point out yes, as the FreeTwitterDesigner (FTD) application we launched back in February 2009 still averages about 4,000 unique visitors a day.  Most of the users of FTD don’t have graphic design skills, but using the FTD app we created, have created their own Twitter background.  So, I do think App Inventor will be quick to catch on and looks fairly user-friendly from video below…
